Work-Based Learning/Learning in the Work Environment

There are various forms of work-based learning/learning in the work environment, with the most important during training in association institutions: training at the end of the learning stage, practical practice in the workplace, and professional apprenticeship starting from vocational education and training institutions. Work-based learning, within these patterns, combines vocational education and training within the educational institution with learning in the workplace, systematically supervised by expert trainers in the workplace and monitored by the vocational education and training institution. Clear models are used, and the economic establishment (workshop, company, or institution) where training will take place is selected based on clear criteria.

Importance of work-based learning:

  • Provides students with opportunities to gain knowledge, translate it into practical work practices, and test theoretical concepts in real situations.
  • Familiarizes students with the real work environment.
  • Involves the labor market in the learning process, keeping the training institution informed of the latest developments.
  • Improves graduates' chances of securing employment.
  • Equips students with professional skills in the job market.
  • Develops life skills, communication and interaction skills in the work environment, problem-solving, and teamwork.
  • Instills socially recognized behavioral attitudes for students' success.
  • Establishes professional work habits benefiting students in their future careers.
  • Imparts professional values and ethical standards through field practice and professional self-development.
  • Provides students with practical experience to help them secure future employment or practice skills as they envision them.
  • Most importantly, the learning process is supervised by the training institution, providing students with a significant opportunity to address the challenges of entering the job market.

Purpose of Work-Based Learning:

Work-based learning aims to provide students with the knowledge, experiences, and skills necessary to apply what they have learned in professions and crafts within the walls of vocational schools. It helps them translate theoretical methods learned in classrooms into practical approaches that contribute to solving customer and community problems.

Through work-based learning, students undergo specialized training to facilitate their engagement in professional life, enhancing their skills. This is achieved by implementing a systematic approach that involves the labor market in developing and executing a curriculum. This ensures that students master professional, life, and technological skills sought by the job market.

The program requires the following:

  1. Clear criteria for selecting companies and workshops for training.
  2. An official contract signed by the training institution, the training company, and the student/parents.
  3. Involvement of the labor market in defining the skills to be trained in the educational institution and the job market.
  4. Preparation of students and a clear program before starting workplace training.
  5. Collaboration between the educational/training institution and the labor market before the training process. Both supervise and monitor the training process.
  6. Effective monitoring and evaluation mechanisms, including enhancing the student's daily record and development.

Based on the above, we can conclude that field training, an integral part of work-based learning, is:

  1. An educational process based on scientific, educational, and supervisory foundations.
  2. Aims to achieve professional and personal growth for trainees by providing them with field experiences, technical skills, and personal characteristics.
  3. Executed through a clear training curriculum, defining roles and responsibilities for all participants.
  4. Requires continuous supervision to ensure the achievement of its objectives.
