YWCA in Jerusalem was established in 1893 and has been active since then specially in areas of Palestinian women empowerment and enhancing women’s status at society. This is to allow access for effective participation in the Palestinian decision-making process.
YWCA seeks to contribute to building a sound democratic community based on equality and respect between women and men. This is to be achieved through ensuring place for all groups in the society, especially the marginalized people (women, young people, and children), in the decision-making process. The purpose is to empower these groups and make them more effective in the community. YWCA also contributes to developing women leaders, especially young leaders, and assist women in realizing their rights and competencies.
The main programs of the association:
- First: The Economic Empowerment Program for Women and Youth
- Secondly: Women's Rights Enhancement Program
- Thirdly. Program to create young leaders capable of participating in decision-making
- Fourth. Cognitive learning program for children
The importance of the vocational training center:
The Palestinian woman, like the rest of the Palestinian society, suffers from numerous economic and political difficulties due to Israeli practices, which cast shadows over their social lives and economic status, exacerbating the repercussions of inequality and gender-based violence practiced against women.
Despite the developments witnessed in Palestinian society in recent years, with a strong movement from civil society, particularly feminist institutions and those concerned with human rights, Palestinian women are still almost absent from the workforce. Official statistics indicate that women's participation in the workforce is approximately 13% of the total labor force in Palestinian society.
The Young Women's Christian Association in Jerusalem, based on its mission to promote women's rights and empower them economically, is keen on the continued performance and development of its vocational training center. This center represents a fundamental pillar for Palestinian women to engage in the labor market, who, due to the wall and other oppressive Israeli practices, are faced with limited options that are almost negligible. The vocational training center is considered one of the most important options available to them, having graduated more than 7,000 Palestinian women who work in various supportive medical jobs and in the field of office management in its various forms.
Significant improvements have been made to the center's building, as the association received support from multiple donors to carry out essential renovations, equip two computer labs, and obtain licensing from the Palestinian Ministry of Labor.
The center offers a specialization in office management, in addition to a multimedia specialization that combines photography, graphic design, and modern kitchen specialization.
The center also offers a range of short courses in design and content writing, digital marketing, as well as photography and accounting applications, along with many other courses that are announced periodically.
