Blacksmithing, welding, and sheet iron molding

1- Description of the profession, the competencies required for the labor market and the required skills:

1- Description of professions: (which the graduate will practice upon graduation from vocational education and training institutions)
The activities of blacksmithing, welding and sheet metal forming professionals are different and varied, as they include detailing, cutting, forming, welding, assembling and installing various metal sheets and profiles with the aim of producing doors, windows, water tanks, metal furniture and other metal products.

Blacksmith workers also work in the field of preparing reinforcement networks for concrete buildings. When manufacturing doors, windows and protective iron, blacksmith workers take measurements from the site and help the customer choose the appropriate models, type and thickness of the simplified iron and profiles used, then blacksmith workers calculate the quantities of metal required in addition to calculating the costs of the work required to be implemented, then the detailing operations begin where the cutting locations are determined from the panels and bars as needed and in a way that ensures the lowest percentage of loss, and after that All required bending and punching operations are carried out, then the assembly process begins where the pieces are connected together by welding, riveting or screws. After the assembly operations are completed, the welding places are sanded and the produced pieces are painted to give the product its final shape, then the manufactured pieces are installed in the specified places.

In the field of sheet metal work, blacksmiths, welders and sheet metal forming workers often work in factories that produce large quantities of standard products such as water tanks, solar heaters and metal furniture or in factories that produce air ducts for central air conditioning systems on demand. In these factories, work is usually divided among workers according to specialization, with some workers working on cutting, bending or rolling machines, others working on presses to form sheet metal using molds, and others working in welding and assembling products, final smoothing and painting.

2- The competencies required to perform these tasks: (The competencies and skills that are trained in vocational education and training institutions to be able to practice the profession according to the description above)
To perform the previous tasks, the blacksmith needs to obtain the competencies of knowledge, skills and directions necessary for that, starting from general competencies in the field of calculations to master the required measurements, to specialized competencies in the field of using welding in making different connections and welding by electric arc, oxyacetylene, carbon dioxide and other types, to mastering the skills of installation, manufacturing, design, assembly, installation and maintenance of doors and windows made of steel and pressed sections, detailing, assembling, installing and maintaining railings and protective nets, preparing and operating the friction disc saw (fiber), preparing and operating welding equipment, and conducting welding operations in the ground, horizontal, vertical and overhead position. They also need competencies in knowing the tools and equipment used and general safety procedures. English language skills, especially those related to the profession, and their familiarity with catalogs related to the profession, and skills in using engineering computer programs specialized in blacksmithing and welding, and the necessary life skills and character building skills to perform the required tasks. And the competencies that enable him to perform the work mentioned in the description of the profession (which are the qualifications required for the labor market), in addition to mastering the modern technology skills that the labor market needs, and he needs competencies that help him open his own project through the necessary entrepreneurial and administrative training. . Blacksmiths acquire these skills and competencies through education and vocational training that they receive in vocational education and training institutions.

2- Work environment, workplaces and the possibility of professional development:

1- Workplaces

  • Workshop (specified)
  • Specialized blacksmith workshops for metal furniture
  • External workshops in buildings (with building contractors)
  • Blacksmith supplies trade

2- Professional development:
The possibility of starting as a blacksmith assistant after graduation, and the period varies according to previous experience and the ability to develop, and then work as a blacksmith. It is also possible for his/her work to develop over time to become a specialized blacksmith with experience. In medium and large workshops, it is possible to develop to work as a blacksmith supervisor, and many blacksmiths create their own work. Income develops and multiplies according to development, gaining experience and demonstrating the ability to develop, and this is what distinguishes a graduate of a vocational education and training institution from someone who joins the labor market without a profession.
In addition, income and employment are linked to the general economic situation, but statistics showed a high ability for vocational graduates to find work or open their own business.

3-Qualification for the profession: (training locations, forms, admission requirements, and the possibility of completing education)

2- Vocational training places
Some centers provide training in metal work or forming or welding, which includes blacksmithing and welding only, and others add aluminum to them, which qualifies graduates of each of them to work in different fields.

Middle East Council of Churches / Gaza Blacksmithing, metal forming and welding

2- Admission requirements

  • Vary according to the Vocational Education and Training Institution
  • Most of them focus on students who have completed the basic stage of education (tenth grade) and are between the ages of 16-20 years.

There are short courses on demand in these centers to develop the skills of workers in the profession and the unemployed or according to the target group.

3- Possibility of completing education

  • Industrial schools that train through the applied or industrial guidance system
  • Vocational training centers that can hold courses that qualify students to apply for the guidance

Those who have completed the vocational guidance can complete their education in colleges and applied universities. Those who have not completed the vocational guidance through their institution can apply for it through private study two years after graduation and work in the profession (some institutions hold qualifying courses to apply for the exam). However, the certificate obtained from these centers qualifies its holder to work as a professional in the labor market without the need to complete his/her studies.
